Newsflash: adopted teenagers are as emotionally stable as non-adopted teenagers.8
renae: I am three months pregnant. The baby's father and I have decided that we think it would be best to place our baby for adoption. The problem is that my parents don't know that I'm considering adoption, and I don't know how to tell them. After all, this baby is a part of their family too. I'm so stressed.

Pam: I admire you. The fact that you and your boyfriend have discussed this difficult issue and that you both genuinely recognize what you are not yet ready for parenting shows extreme maturity. Please remember that at this point you are projecting how your parents will respond. I'm sure that finding out you were pregnant was challenging for them, and the fact that they have embraced your situation with grace shows godly love. But, that doesn't mean they are happy about it. As a parent, I can assure you that they want the best for you. Support does not equal an expectation that you will parent this baby. I'd suggest family therapy with a Christian counselor so that you can process your experience together. This will help to keep your communication flowing and bring you closer together in the process.
If you feel pressured to keep the baby and do not feel ready, please remember that this is your choice. You might be young, but you still get to make the decision. The reality is that you cannot keep your baby out of fear of disappointing someone else. This decision is going to change your life . . . either because your “I love you” meant saying a difficult goodbye or because your life is transformed from high school games and going to movies with your friends into changing diapers, feeding your infant and making yourself available to meet the needs of your child.
